For a weekend in Vienna with children, a central apartment with its own kitchen is usually the calmer choice than a hotel room. You get separate sleeping areas, you cook at your own pace, and you reach the main sights on foot or a few U-Bahn stops away. This guide covers what to look for, what a weekend costs, how to get around with kids, and what to do. For a deeper look at family amenities, see our Vienna family apartment guide. Our five apartments at MINT @Naschmarkt sit in the 6th district, one minute from the Naschmarkt.
Why an apartment rather than a hotel room?
A family weekend is more than one item on a checklist after another. It is shared time in which the children can also wind down, and an apartment gives you the room a hotel room rarely offers.
| Hotel room | Family apartment | |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping | usually one room for everyone | separate sleeping areas |
| Eating | restaurant or room service | your own kitchen, flexible |
| Allergies, diets, baby food | hard to plan | self-prepared, full control |
| Laundry | for a fee | your own washing machine |
| Value for 3 to 4 people | priced per person | priced per apartment |
In separate sleeping areas the children sleep while the parents still have a quiet moment. The fully equipped kitchen takes the pressure out of the day: breakfast, a snack and dinner happen when hunger strikes. With allergies or small children that is a real advantage, because you know exactly what goes on the plate.
What to look for in a family-friendly apartment
Families look for the same things: enough space, a real kitchen, short distances and an apartment you can get into easily. Check for a lift if you travel with a pram, a washing machine for longer stays, and a kitchen that lets you handle a special diet or baby food.
At MINT, every apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a lift, a washing machine, air conditioning and fast Wi-Fi. For specific needs such as an extra bed, message Christian and we will sort it out personally before you book.
Which MINT apartment suits your family?
At MINT you choose from five individually designed apartments. Three work especially well for families:
- Double MINT with Balcony (55 m², up to 3 guests): the compact choice for a small family, with its own balcony for fresh air in the evening.
- MINT Artisan (65 m², up to 4 guests): plenty of space and a design character of its own for four.
- Penthouse (85 m², up to 4 guests): two separate bedrooms and a private roof terrace, ideal for families or several generations.
What a family weekend in Vienna costs
The biggest items are accommodation, food, transport and admission. With your own kitchen you save noticeably on food, because not every meal happens in a restaurant. At MINT you book direct, and the nightly rate drops for longer stays: 15 percent off from seven nights, 20 percent from fourteen, and 25 percent from 28.
Plan for two further items. Vienna's Ortstaxe (city tax) rises from 3.2 to 5 percent of the accommodation charge on 1 July 2026 and applies to families on a leisure trip, with no age exemption (Stadt Wien). And transport: a single ticket costs 3.20 EUR in 2026, a 24-hour ticket 10.20 EUR (wien.info). How much of that applies to your children depends on their age and the dates you travel, which we come to next.
Getting there and getting around with children
From the airport, the City Airport Train reaches Wien Mitte in 16 minutes, from where it is one U4 stop towards the Naschmarkt. The single ticket costs 14.90 EUR, and children under 15 travel free (wien.info). If you need to bridge some time, Check-in 3 at the airport has a roughly 90 m² Family Fun Gate with a slide and climbing wall, open around the clock (wien.info).
In the city, the location saves you a lot of walking. From the Naschmarkt it is about three minutes on foot to the U-Bahn (Karlsplatz and Kettenbrückengasse, lines U1, U2 and U4), eight minutes to the State Opera and ten minutes to the MuseumsQuartier. A lift takes you up with a pram and luggage, so there is no carrying up stairs. Arrival stays flexible: self check-in lets you reach your apartment even when you arrive late or early, check-in is from 3 p.m., and we store your luggage free of charge beforehand.
Public transport with kids
Vienna is cheap to get around as a family. Children under 6 always travel free on the Wiener Linien network, and children under 15 travel free on all Sundays and public holidays and during the Vienna school holidays (Wiener Linien). Note that the rule keys off the Vienna school-holiday calendar, not your home region. Vienna's summer holidays in 2026 run from 4 July to 6 September (BMBWF). Outside those times a child ticket costs 1.60 EUR instead of 3.20 EUR (wien.info).
What to do with children
The Naschmarkt with its roughly 130 stalls is on your doorstep (wien.info), and the nearest playground in the Resselpark at Karlsplatz is only a few minutes away, a 41,500 m² park with a children's playground (Stadt Wien). From here the big family destinations are quick to reach. The prices below are for 2026:
| Destination | Who | Price 2026 | Indoor/outdoor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wurstelprater (free entry; rides 1-20 €; Giant Ferris Wheel 14.50 €) | all ages | from free | outdoor |
| Donauinsel water playground (5,000 m², 1 May to 30 Sep) | children | free | outdoor |
| Schönbrunn Zoo | adult 29 €, child 6-19 17 €, under 6 free | from free | both |
| Haus des Meeres | adult 23.50 €, child 6-15 9.80 €, age 3-5 6.50 €, under 3 free | from free | indoor |
| Technical Museum | free under 19, adult 18 € | from free | indoor |
| ZOOM children's museum (8 months to 14 years) | children + adult | 5-7 € per person | indoor |
| Schönbrunn Children's Museum (from age 3) | families | 12 € per person | indoor |
Sources: Prater, Donauinsel, Schönbrunn Zoo, Haus des Meeres, Technical Museum, ZOOM, Schönbrunn for children.
If the weather turns, simply move the day indoors: the Haus des Meeres, the Technical Museum and the ZOOM children's museum all fill a full day. The city keeps a good overview of free offers for children at wien.info.
Eating with children
This is where your own kitchen earns its keep. Breakfast and snacks are made the way your children are used to, and allergies or a diet stop being a source of stress. If you want to eat out, you will find plenty of places around the Naschmarkt; wien.info keeps a list of family-friendly addresses for the whole city.
When is the best time for a family weekend?
Vienna works with children all year, but its character changes with the season. Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking and usually cheaper than peak season. Summer plays out outdoors: the Donauinsel water playground is open from 1 May to 30 September (wien.info), and the Prater invites you to linger. Winter brings the Christmas markets and an easy indoor programme in the museums.
One timing tip with savings attached: during the Vienna school holidays, children under 15 travel free on public transport. Vienna's summer holidays in 2026 run from 4 July to 6 September (BMBWF). If you are flexible, plan your weekend into one of those windows, or onto a long weekend with a Sunday or public holiday, when the same rule applies.
Your weekend, at an easy pace
You do not need to schedule every hour. With a central base and your own kitchen, the rhythm almost sets itself:
- Day 1, arrive: drop the bags or store them free before check-in, take a first wander through the Naschmarkt, let the children loose in the Resselpark playground, then cook together in the apartment.
- Day 2, one big thing: a main attraction such as Schönbrunn Zoo or the Prater in the morning, a break back at the apartment in the afternoon so the little ones recharge.
- Day 3, flexible: a museum for indoors if the weather does not cooperate, then an unhurried departure. Bridge the 11 a.m. check-out with free luggage storage if you need to.
That leaves room for what a family weekend is really about: shared time without the rush.
Practical matters: quiet, safety and medical care
The Naschmarkt is lively by day, and our apartments are positioned so that you can settle after a full day. Christian is happy to talk through the character and location of a specific apartment before you book.
If a child falls ill, care is easy to reach. The Ärztefunkdienst (medical on-call service) is reached on 141, weekdays from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., continuously from Friday 7 p.m. to Monday 7 a.m., and all day on public holidays (Stadt Wien). The city also lists night and weekend pharmacy services (Stadt Wien). In a genuine emergency, the ambulance number is 144.
