Central apartment Vienna is what most people search when they want to stay in the middle of things: short distances, everything on foot, no trek across the city in the evening. The mistake is to equate central with the 1st district. The 1st district is the city's priciest address, but not the only central one. Around the Naschmarkt in the 6th district you live just as centrally on foot, at noticeably more moderate prices. Here is what "central" really means in Vienna, with the real walk-times.

What does "central" really mean in Vienna?

Central means short distances to the things you come to Vienna for, on foot or one underground stop away. Vienna is built compactly, the historic core sits inside the Ring, and the inner districts press right up against it. The 1st district is the centre in the narrowest sense, but the 4th, 6th, and 7th districts border it directly and are just as walkable to the opera, the museums, and the shopping streets. Measure "central" by an actual walk-time instead of a postal code, and suddenly you have far more choice.

Central does not mean the 1st district: the real walk-times

At the Naschmarkt in the 6th district, "central" in minutes looks like this:

DestinationFrom the Naschmarkt
Mariahilfer Straße (shopping)0 to 5 minutes on foot
Karlsplatz underground3 minutes on foot
State Opera8 minutes on foot
MuseumsQuartier10 minutes on foot
Stephansplatz (1st district)about 15 minutes on foot or a few minutes by underground

That is the point: from the 6th district you are within minutes of everything people travel into the 1st district for, only you live in a grown neighbourhood (Grätzl) instead of among office blocks and tourist shops. From the airport the CAT brings you to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes.

1st district or 6th district: what does the location cost?

Honestly: the 1st district has a real advantage if you want to step straight out the door onto Stephansplatz, and it costs the most for exactly that. For most stays you pay a premium there for metres you would walk in a quarter of an hour anyway. The 6th district around the Naschmarkt offers the same reach at more moderate prices, plus the market, the restaurants, and the Mariahilfer Straße at the door. Which area suits which stay is set out in the overview of the Naschmarkt and its districts, and where to stay in Vienna is covered in the guide to choosing an area.

Renting or booking an apartment in the centre?

Two different routes. "Renting" usually means a private flat via willhaben or an agent, for months to years, with a deposit and a contract. "Booking" means a furnished serviced apartment, by the night to the month, with no deposit, as at a hotel. For a stay of a few nights to 3 months, the booked serviced apartment is usually simpler. What exactly a serviced apartment includes is set out in the overview of serviced apartments in Vienna, the prices in the prices at the Naschmarkt.
