Do you need a visa to visit Austria?

Updated June 2026

We host guests from dozens of countries, and the question we hear most often is about visas. Guests ask us whether they need one for Austria, so we built this guide and keep it current. Pick your nationality below, then follow the steps and the official links.

What changed in 2026

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is rolling out at the Schengen border in 2026: your entry and exit are recorded automatically, with fingerprints and a photo, instead of a passport stamp. ETIAS, a quick online travel authorisation for visa-free travellers, is expected to follow but is not yet mandatory. Neither replaces a Schengen visa if your nationality needs one.

Austria visa questions, answered

Is a Schengen visa valid for Austria?

Yes. Austria is part of the Schengen area, so a short-stay Schengen visa lets you visit. If Austria is your main destination, apply through the Austrian consulate or its visa centre.

ETIAS, EES, Schengen visa: what is the difference in 2026?

A Schengen visa is a sticker you apply for in advance if your nationality needs one. The EES is the new automated entry and exit check at the border, rolling out in 2026 for everyone. ETIAS is a quick online travel authorisation that visa-free travellers will need once it becomes mandatory; it is not yet required as of this update.

How much money do I need to show for an Austria visa?

Austria looks for roughly EUR 100 per day of your stay, covered by bank statements and income proof. A confirmed, fully paid place to stay lowers the daily figure the consulate expects.

How long does an Austria Schengen visa take?

The standard processing time is 15 calendar days, and it can stretch to 45 in busy periods or complex cases. Apply up to 6 months ahead, and at least 3 weeks before you travel.

Why are Schengen visas rejected, and how do I avoid it?

The common reasons are thin or inconsistent finances, weak ties to home, an itinerary that does not match the booked nights, and insurance below EUR 30,000. Book your stay first, keep your documents consistent, and apply through the country where you spend the most nights.

Which consulate do I apply at if I visit more than one country?

Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. If the nights are split evenly, apply to your first point of entry into the Schengen area. When Vienna is your main stop, that is Austria.

How does the 90/180-day rule work?

You may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day window across the whole Schengen area, not per country. Count every day you are inside Schengen, then look back 180 days from any date.

Do I need travel insurance for an Austria visa?

Yes. A Schengen visa requires travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover, valid across the whole Schengen area for your full stay.

Do US, UK, Canadian or Australian travellers need a visa for Austria?

No. These nationalities visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. Once ETIAS is mandatory they will first get a quick online authorisation, but no consulate visit is needed.

Is it easier to get a visa for Austria than for Spain, France, Italy or Germany?

It is the same visa. Austria follows the shared Schengen rules, so the documents and the 90/180 limit are identical across every country. Refusal rates do differ: Austria refused about 14 percent of applications in 2024, close to the Schengen-wide average of 14.8 percent. But you cannot simply pick the country with the best odds. You apply where you spend the most nights, or your first point of entry. If Vienna is your main stop, that is Austria.

What is the approval rate for an Austria Schengen visa?

In 2024, the latest full year of EU figures, Austria received about 262,000 short-stay applications and issued roughly 86 percent of them, so around 14 percent were refused. Most refusals come down to weak or unclear finances and travel plans that do not hold together, not the nationality of the applicant. A well-documented application is what moves the odds.

I am a citizen of one country but live in another. Where do I apply?

Your visa requirement follows your nationality, not where you live. Where you apply follows your residence: if you legally reside in a third country, you usually apply at the Austrian consulate that covers that place, and a valid residence permit there strengthens your case. Confirm the consulate accepts applications from residents, not only from citizens.

What about a business, study or work visa for Austria?

This guide is about short visits of up to 90 days, which use the Schengen visa, the same one whether you travel for tourism or a short business meeting. Longer stays for study or work need a national (D) visa or a residence permit, arranged through the Austrian consulate and, for work, together with your employer. The BMEIA link below is the place to start.
