Rathausplatz Christmas market dates for 2026 are 13 November to 26 December, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, with an early close at 18:30 on 24 December. It is Vienna's official Christmas market, on the square in front of City Hall in the 1st district: 96 huts in 2025, an ice rink that stays open until 6 January 2027, and a children's area in the park beside it. Entry is free. It is worth one visit on a weekday, from late morning into the first hour after dark, and not worth a December weekend night.

When is the Rathausplatz Christmas market open in 2026?
The operator's English site and German homepage both give 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, closing at 18:30 on 24 December. The ice rink keeps its own, longer season: 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with the same hours, closed on 31 December, according to the rink's operator, Wiener Eistraum.

Watch out: If a page says the market runs to 6 January 2027, it has mixed up the stalls with the rink. One German travel magazine page published in July 2026 still gives 14 November to 6 January. The stalls close on 26 December; after that, only the rink is left.
What is at the market: 96 huts, an ice rink and a park for children
The market has stood in front of City Hall since 1975, as Hotel Sacher's market guide notes; our 2026 guide covers the longer history. It has three parts: the market on the square, the ice rink, and the park beside it.
The market itself had 96 huts on the square in 2025, according to the City of Vienna's November 2025 opening announcement. The 2026 count is not out yet, and VisitingVienna says to "expect around 96 booths". There is no official stall map, so walk the whole square once before you buy anything.
The ice rink covers around 3,000 m². For small children, Ganz Wien's 2025 guide lists a separate 110 m² children's rink with skates, double-runner skates and helmets for hire. The rink's price for the Christmas weeks was not published when we checked on 18 September 2026; its website mentions 10% off for booking online.
The city calls the park the Weihnachtswelt (Christmas world): a nativity trail with handmade scenes, several rides, and ten newly designed figures and objects for children to explore. After dark there is also the Herzerlflug, the flying heart. ORF Wien described it in 2022: a heart sets off from a 13 m tower and travels 75 m along a cable over the crowd to the heart tree, which the city says carries 200 red LED hearts. According to the City of Vienna's November 2025 opening announcement, the Herzerlflug heart floats over the crowd every 30 minutes after dark, up from an hourly frequency reported in 2022; this has not yet been confirmed for the 2026 season.
For children who want to make something, Stadtrundfahrt's 2025 guide lists readings, puppet theatre, baking biscuits together and writing a letter to the Christkind (the Christ Child, who brings the presents in Austria). That was 2025; the 2026 programme is not out yet. If an older page offers tickets for the Christkindlwerkstatt workshop, ignore it: MeinBezirk reported in 2016 that it was replaced that year by free gingerbread decorating and letter writing inside City Hall, so that far more children could take part.
Punsch from €3.50 and a €5 mug deposit: what to pay for, what to buy elsewhere
Entry is free, as at every official Vienna Christmas market. You pay for food, drink, rides, the rink and the mug deposit.
According to Heute.at's October 2024 reporting, the cheapest organic alcohol-free Punsch (hot fruit punch) at the Wiener Christkindlmarkt cost €3.50, organic Glühwein (mulled wine) from €4.50, organic Punsch with alcohol from €5, and the mug deposit (Häferlpfand) a flat €5, unchanged from prior years; confirm at the stand for 2026. The city sets no prices, so each stall charges its own.
Return the mug at a drinks stall and you get the €5 back. Keep it and you have paid €5 for a souvenir; the 2025 mugs carried the words "Wiener Christkindlmarkt" in Braille for the first time. Two drinks and one deposit come to more than €10, and as the Viennese writer Theresa Komornyik put it in 1000things Magazine in December 2023, a ten-euro note does not get you very far here.
The stallholders also pay a high rent for the season. According to Heute.at's December 2025 reporting, which names Rathausplatz specifically, a season-long stall rental there runs from about €3,500 for a small craft stand up to €55,000 for a prime Punsch stand and as much as €80,000 for a larger food-and-drink operation.
If you want handmade gifts to take home, buy them at Karlsplatz or the Freyung. Pressefeuer reported in December 2025 that a 2022 redesign left the Rathausplatz with fewer traditional stalls and more modern attractions. Not everyone is happy with the changes: the same report cites an unsourced survey finding that 60% of Viennese see the market as overly commercialised, and quotes a former vendor whose family had run a stand for nearly 50 years before losing its place after the redesign.
How do you get to the Rathausplatz Christmas market from the Naschmarkt? 4 stops, 1 change
The U2 stops at Rathaus. Ganz Wien's getting-there page also lists the U3 to Volkstheater, and trams 1 and D to Burgtheater, across the road from City Hall. Tram 71 and bus routes 1A and 48A are also named as serving the area by at least one Vienna travel guide, VisitingVienna, though we could not confirm them on a Wiener Linien page; treat trams 1 and D (Burgtheater stop) as the best-corroborated route.
From our apartments, take the U4 from Kettenbrückengasse one stop to Karlsplatz, change to the U2, and ride three stops: Museumsquartier, Volkstheater, Rathaus. That is about 12 to 15 minutes platform to platform (our own estimate, not a routed journey-planner time), with one change at Karlsplatz. Walking is about 30 to 35 minutes (also our own estimate) and not recommended for this market.

Local tip: For the photograph of the whole square, VisitingVienna's advice is to "stand at the top of the steps leading up to the Burgtheater theatre building on the other side of the road".
Can you reach the market step-free? Not through U2 Rathaus before 2030
The square itself has features for disabled visitors. The City of Vienna's November 2025 announcement lists Braille on the mugs and on information boards in the northern park, an accessible toilet with a Eurokey lock, food-stall tables at an adjusted height, large high-contrast signs, texts in plain language, and cash machines for wheelchair users.
The U2 station is not step-free. MeinBezirk reported in January 2025 that two staircases lead out of U2 Rathaus, with no lift and no escalator, and that the platform in the Seestadt direction, the one you arrive at from Karlsplatz, stays stairs-only until the building works finish, expected in 2030. Wiener Linien lists Rathaus among the stations of its U2xU5 project. Until then, the workaround MeinBezirk reported is an accessible Wiener Linien shuttle from Volkstheater to Rathaus and from Rathaus to Schottentor. Book it on 0664 623 65 98 (+43 664 623 65 98 from a foreign phone) at least 15 minutes before you want to travel, and check when you call that it is still running.
If you drive, APCOA says its Tiefgarage Rathausquartier (Rathausstraße 1) is a few minutes from the Christmas markets. Its rates, checked 18 September 2026: €3.50 for the first hour by day (max €20, 07:00 to 19:00), €2.50 by night (max €5, 19:00 to 07:00), daily maximum €25. Confirm at booking, as the page carries no effective-date stamp. Ganz Wien also names the Parkgarage Rathausplatz at Universitätsring 1; we found no price for it.
When should you go? A weekday, between 10:00 and the first hour after dark
Go on a weekday: at 10:00 if you have small children, or in the late afternoon if you want to stay for the lights and the flying heart.

The market is best for first-time visitors and families. The park, the children's rink and the heart are the parts worth the trip. For crafts to take home, go to Karlsplatz or the Freyung. For a long evening with a drink, go to Spittelberg.
After the Rathausplatz: Spittelberg is 1 U2 stop back towards home
We suggest the Rathausplatz during the day and Spittelberg in the evening. Take the U2 one stop back to Volkstheater, which is near Spittelberg, and when you are done there, walk home to the Naschmarkt in about 15 minutes (our own estimate). See the Spittelberg market guide for its hours.

Where is the best place to visit the Christmas markets in Vienna? Stay somewhere that puts several markets within easy reach.
