Vienna Opera Ball 2027 takes place on Thursday 4 February at the Staatsoper, with entry from 20:15 and an official end at 05:00. Entrance costs €435, and the raffle that decided who could buy those tickets closed on 5 June 2026. That €435 buys entry but no seat: a seat at a table is a separate ticket, at €665 with entry included. If you want to dance that week, the Juristenball is in the Hofburg two nights later, and entry costs €198.

How much does it cost to go to the Vienna Opera Ball in 2027?

At €435, the Opera Ball costs about twice as much to enter as the Philharmonic Ball (€220) or the Juristenball (€198). If you have not fixed your dates yet, our guide to the best time to visit Vienna, month by month compares February's weather and events with the other months.

A seat at a table adds €230 to the price of entry. For two people, Opera Ball entry comes to €870, or €1,330 with seats; two Juristenball tickets cost €396. Selling seats separately is common at Viennese balls: the Juristenball sells its seats on top of entry, and the Kaffeesiederball's tickets include no seat, though its online quota is sold out as of mid-October 2026. Opera Ball spectator tickets are priced at €110 to €290.

Can tourists still go to the Vienna Opera Ball in 2027?

For 2027, the entrance raffle is over: registration ran from 1 June, 10:00, to 5 June 2026, 23:59. The raffle did not give tickets away: it decided who could buy one, at €435. Table seats went on sale on 24 June 2026 at 10:00, first come, first served. The Opera Ball Office sells every ticket; there are no other points of sale.

You cannot become a debutant for 2027 either: applications for the young couples who open the ball ran from 1 June to 23 September 2026. Debutants must be 18 to 27 on the day of the ball and pay €140 each once accepted.

If you did not register in June, you can still see the opening at the dress rehearsal, watch the ball on television, or dance at another ball that week.

Can you watch the Opera Ball without a ticket? The 3 February rehearsal

You can watch on television, or inside the Staatsoper at the dress rehearsal, which has its own raffle. The dress rehearsal of the opening is on Wednesday 3 February 2027 at 20:00, the evening before the ball, and there is no dress code. Registration for the raffle runs from 11 November, the day Vienna's ball season opens, to 18 November 2026, and winners are told in December. Registrations from tour operators and commercial resellers are not considered. The rooms are only partly decorated, and you cannot dance in the ballroom.

The ball is broadcast live on television. In 2026, ORF2 carried the night from 20:15 and its "Alles Walzer" programme from 21:05, and ORF ON streamed it from 20:15; the 2027 schedule is not published yet.

On other days you can see the house on a guided tour of about 40 minutes, in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian or Japanese. Tour dates go online around the middle of each month for the month after, so the February 2027 dates should appear around mid-January. You buy online, or on site from 30 minutes before a tour while places last. For the rest of your days in the city, see our Vienna visitor guide.

What time does the Vienna Opera Ball start and end? 20:15 to 05:00

Entry opens at 20:15, and the ball officially ends at 05:00. In between, the night runs in this order:

  • 20:15: entry
  • 21:00: the Austrian President arrives
  • 22:00: the opening, with The Blue Danube as the opening waltz
  • 22:45: "Everyone Waltz!" ("Alles Walzer" in German), and the floor opens to all guests
  • 00:00: the Fledermaus quadrille, a highlight of the night
  • 02:00: the Orpheus quadrille
  • 04:00: the Maskenball quadrille
  • 05:00: the official end

About 150 young couples in white gowns and tails open the ball, and the opening lasts about 50 minutes. After that, the guests have the floor for six and a quarter hours, from 22:45 to 05:00. A quadrille is danced by the guests to a dance teacher's calls, and at Viennese balls it tends to end in a muddle, to everyone's amusement.

The organiser counts 5 dance floors and 20 bars and buffets across 9 floors, and about 150 musicians play in eight areas of the house. Converting the hall for the ball and taking it down again takes more than 50 hours.

At 05:00, the walk from the Staatsoper back to our apartments by the Naschmarkt takes about 16 minutes, by our estimate.

What is the dress code for the Vienna Opera Ball 2027?

The dress code is compulsory for every guest:

  • Women: a floor-length ball gown, in any colour; no traditional costume or Dirndl.
  • Men: a black tailcoat with a white bow tie and black patent leather shoes, or a gala uniform.

A tuxedo is not on the list. If you own a tuxedo but no tails, the Juristenball two nights later accepts one, and the TU Ball on 28 January 2027 allows a black suit with a bow tie, though not a necktie.

Is there another ball the same week as the Opera Ball? The Juristenball on 6 February 2027

The Juristenball, the Lawyers' Ball, is in the Hofburg on Saturday 6 February 2027, two nights after the Opera Ball. Its tickets are on general sale as of mid-October 2026. The Hofburg is about 22 minutes on foot from our apartments, by our estimate.

  • Entry costs €198, reduced €180, and a youth ticket €75.
  • Entry includes the cloakroom, for up to three items.
  • Seats at a table are sold on top of entry.
  • Women wear a floor-length evening dress, without exception.
  • Men wear tails with a white bow tie, a tuxedo with a black or coloured bow tie, or a gala uniform.
  • The committee can refuse entry to anyone not dressed for the ball.
  • The opening ends, as at the Opera Ball, with the call "Alles Walzer".

Vienna holds more than 450 balls a year, and three more in the Hofburg fall within a week of the Opera Ball:

If your dates can move to January, the Philharmonic Ball fills all the halls of the Musikverein on Thursday 21 January 2027, and it also ends at 05:00. The Musikverein is about 17 minutes on foot from us, by our estimate. Entry costs €220, or €75 for students up to 27. Tickets go on sale on 11 January 2027; before that, they come only with a table reservation, made by e-mail from 5 October 2026.

Where to stay for the Opera Ball: about 16 minutes on foot to the Staatsoper

Our apartments by the Naschmarkt put the Staatsoper, the Musikverein and the Hofburg within about 22 minutes on foot, by our estimate, so the Opera Ball and the Juristenball are both a walk home. Check-in is from 15:00, which leaves time to change before a ball. Check-out is by 11:00, which comes early after a 05:00 finish: book the night after the ball as well, or leave your bags with us free after check-out.

For two couples, the Penthouse Maisonette has two bedrooms in 85 m² and sleeps 4, from €375 a night; the MINT Artisan also sleeps 4, in 65 m², from €185. Stays are two nights or more; Wednesday 3 to Sunday 7 February covers the rehearsal and the Juristenball. You can check dates and book direct with us.
