Ice skating in Vienna centres on the Rathausplatz, where the Wiener Eistraum runs from 22 January to 7 March 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00. A smaller Christmas market rink on the same square runs from 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. In between, from 7 to 21 January, the square has no ice, so skate at the Wiener Eislaufverein or the Engelmann rooftop rink. Beginners should come to the Eistraum before 17:00, when its beginners area becomes a curling rink.
Where can you ice skate in Vienna in winter 2026/27?
The Rathausplatz has two rinks, one after the other. Three others are by the Stadtpark, on a roof in Hernals and indoors at the Stadthalle. If you have not fixed your dates yet, start with the best time to visit Vienna, month by month.

The Eislaufverein is the closest rink to our door. The Eisstadthalle is indoors, so keep it for a wet day. Engelmann is the furthest, and easier by U-Bahn and tram than on foot. In winter 2025/26 an adult day ticket cost between €9.50 and €12 at the Rathausplatz, the Eislaufverein and Engelmann.
When is the Wiener Eistraum 2027?
The Eistraum runs from 22 January to 7 March 2027, every day from 10:00 to 22:00. The last day, 7 March, is a Sunday.
The Christmas rink on the same square opens first, on 13 November 2026, and runs to 6 January 2027, also from 10:00 to 22:00. On 24 December it closes at 18:30, and on 31 December it is closed.
Why skate at the Eistraum: more than 10,000 m² of ice
- More than 10,000 m² of ice, which in 2026 was split into seven areas, six of them connected.
- About 2,000 pairs of hire skates, pre-warmed with warm air, in sizes 23 to 52.

- The Sky Rink viewing platform, which you can visit without skates since its 2025 redesign, so a parent who does not skate can still watch.

3 things to plan around at the Eistraum
- There is no ice on the square from 7 to 21 January.
- At 17:00 the beginners area becomes a curling rink, so beginners lose their own space for the evening.
- On school days from 10:00 to 16:00, Vienna school classes skate there free. About 45,000 children use this every year.
How much does ice skating at the Rathausplatz cost? €9.50 online in 2026
In 2026 an adult ticket cost €9.50 in the online shop and €10.50 at the ticket office, a child ticket €6.70 online; prices for 2027 were not out when we checked (the online shop reopens for the season).
- Services booked in the online shop cost 10% less, and in 2026 an adult ticket was €1 cheaper there.
- Members of the City of Vienna's Vorteilsclub skate at half price on Mondays.
- In 2025/26 the eight curling lanes were booked in 30-minute blocks at €70 with a supervisor.
Where should beginners and children skate in Vienna? At the Eistraum, before 17:00
At the Eistraum, the best time for a first go is a weekend or Vienna's semester break, 1 to 6 February 2027, before 17:00. Then the beginners area is open and there are no school classes. On a school day, that leaves the hour from 16:00 to 17:00. In 2026 the Eistraum had a free practice area for beginners. Ask for a free helmet, and for a small child the adjustable double runners.
In 2025/26 the Eislaufverein charged children aged 3 to 6 €3 on weekdays and €3.50 at weekends, and on weekdays one adult with one child of that age paid €13. At Engelmann that season, ages 3 to 5 paid €4 on weekdays. The Eislaufverein has also run a course for children up to 12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 14:30 to 16:00, at €11 for 1.5 hours. Check that it runs this season.

The Christmas rink on the Rathausplatz is open until 6 January. From 7 to 21 January, skate at one of the other three rinks.
Wiener Eislaufverein, by the Stadtpark
The Eislaufverein is at Lothringerstraße 22, by the Stadtpark. Its season runs to March, but its 2026/27 dates were not published when we checked. In 2025/26 it opened on 8 November and ran daily from 09:00 to 20:00, Fridays to 21:00. Adults paid €11 on weekdays and €12 at weekends, ages 7 to 17 paid €8 and €8.50, and a ticket for the last two hours cost €7.50 and €8.50. It has also run partner evenings on Fridays from 17:00 to 21:00, except holidays, when two people skate for the price of one adult.
Kunsteisbahn Engelmann, on a roof in Hernals
Engelmann's ice is on the flat roof of a building in Hernals, at Syringgasse 6 to 14 in the 17th district. It opened in 1909 as the world's first open-air artificial ice rink, and its ice has measured 3,000 m² since 1932. The 2026/27 season opens on Friday 6 November 2026 at 09:00. In 2025/26 a weekday day ticket cost about €10.50 for adults (€11 at weekends), €8 for ages 6 to 17 and €4 for ages 3 to 5. An adult evening ticket, from 2.5 hours before closing, cost €7 on weekdays and €8 at weekends.
Eisstadthalle, indoors
Halle C of the Wiener Stadthalle is an indoor rink open all year, with skates to hire on site. In winter 2025/26 it opened on Saturdays from 10:00 to 19:00, with an ice party from 16:00, and on Sundays from 10:00 to 16:45.
How do you get to the Eistraum by U-Bahn? 4 stops from Kettenbrückengasse
Take the U4 from Kettenbrückengasse, our station, one stop to Karlsplatz. Change there to the U2 and ride three stops to Rathaus. The U3 also stops at Volkstheater, where you use the Ring exit, and trams 1, 71 and D stop at Rathausplatz/Burgtheater. On foot it is about 2.1 km, about 28 minutes by our estimate.
For the other rinks:
- Eislaufverein: the U4 two stops to Stadtpark, with no change, or about 24 minutes on foot by our estimate.
- Engelmann: the U4 three stops to Längenfeldgasse, then the U6 to Alser Straße and tram 43 one stop to Palffygasse, or a walk out along Jörgerstraße; on foot it is about 50 minutes by our estimate.
- Eisstadthalle: about 31 minutes on foot by our estimate.
Where to stay for a skating trip: 2 U4 stops from the Eislaufverein
Our five apartments are a minute from the Naschmarkt, by Kettenbrückengasse. From there the Eislaufverein is two U4 stops away and the Eistraum four stops with one change, or about 28 minutes on foot by our estimate. If the Eistraum is your only plan, a base near the Rathausplatz is closer.
